Difference Between SIL and SDA
When looking at NDIS housing and support options, two common terms you may hear are SIL and SDA. They sound similar, but they are not the same.
Understanding the difference between SIL and SDA can help participants, families and support coordinators choose the right type of support.
What is SIL?
SIL stands for Supported Independent Living.
SIL is the support a participant receives to help with daily living tasks. This support can help a person live more independently at home or in a shared living environment.
SIL may include support with:
Personal care
Daily routines
Meal preparation
Household tasks
Medication prompts
Building life skills
Community access
Overnight or regular support, depending on the person’s needs
SIL is about the support provided to the participant.
What is SDA?
SDA stands for Specialist Disability Accommodation.
SDA is housing designed for eligible NDIS participants who have significant functional impairment or very high support needs. SDA is about the physical home or accommodation, not the daily support worker assistance.
SDA properties may include features such as:
Wider doorways
Accessible bathrooms
Safer layouts
Assistive technology
Improved physical access
Design features to support independence and safety
SDA is about the specialist housing itself.
Simple difference between SIL and SDA
The easiest way to understand the difference is:
SIL = the support
SDA = the home
A participant may receive SIL support in a home, but that home may or may not be SDA.
Some participants may live in SDA and also receive SIL. Others may receive SIL without needing SDA. It depends on the participant’s NDIS plan, goals and support needs.
Why understanding the difference matters
Understanding the difference between SIL and SDA helps families and support coordinators make better decisions.
For example, a participant may need support with daily routines, personal care and meals. In that case, SIL may be suitable.
Another participant may need a specially designed home because of mobility, accessibility or safety needs. In that case, SDA may be relevant.
Sometimes both may be needed together.
