The 1 October 2026 SIL Registration Deadline: What NDIS Participants Need to Know

From 1 October 2026 your SIL provider must be registered or have applied to register. What happens if they have not, who checks, and the five things to do before the deadline. Updated August 2026.

From 1 October 2026, your Supported Independent Living (SIL) provider must either be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission or have lodged a registration application. Providers who have applied can keep delivering and claiming while their application is assessed. Providers who have not applied by that date can only claim for services delivered up to 30 September 2026.

If you or someone you support lives in a SIL arrangement, this is the one NDIS date to have in your diary this year. Here is what it means in plain terms, current as at 6 August 2026.

What exactly is changing?

The NDIA announced on 9 June 2026 that SIL is becoming a support that requires provider registration. The wording is specific and worth reading carefully: your SIL provider must be registered or apply to register by 1 October 2026.

Two related changes have already happened:

  • On 1 July 2026 the SIL claim code changed from 0115 to 0138, "Assistance with Supported Independent Living".

  • A new registration group, 0137, was introduced for NDIS digital platform providers.

What happens on 1 October 2026 if my provider has not applied?

Two things follow.

First, plan managers should reject invoices from SIL providers who are not registered and have not applied. That means the invoices simply will not be paid.

Second, participants whose SIL provider does not register or apply will need to move to a provider who has. That is a real disruption, which is why it is worth asking the question now rather than in late September.

Does this apply if I choose and manage my own support workers?

No. The NDIA has been explicit on this point. If you choose and manage your own support workers, including directing, planning and rostering them, that is not SIL, and the mandatory registration changes do not apply to you.

Does this affect support coordination?

No. Mandatory registration for support coordination has been paused while further reform is considered. If your support coordinator is unregistered, nothing changes for them on 1 October 2026.

What should I do before 1 October 2026?

  • Ask your SIL provider directly. Are you registered, or have you lodged an application? When?

  • Get the answer in writing. An email is enough. If a provider is vague or will not answer, treat that as information.

  • Tell your plan manager. They are the ones who will be checking invoices from October, so they should not be surprised.

  • Do not panic-switch. A provider who has lodged an application can keep supporting you while it is assessed. Applying is enough to keep going.

  • Know your backup. If your provider will not confirm, start looking now while you have time to choose properly rather than in a rush.

Does this change my plan or my budget?

No. This is a rule about who is allowed to deliver and claim for SIL. Your funded supports and your plan budget are not affected by the registration change itself.

Where Link Support Services stands

Our registration application with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission is in progress. We currently work with plan-managed and self-managed participants, and we are happy to confirm our current registration status in writing to any participant, family member, plan manager or support coordinator who asks.

We would rather you asked us directly than guessed.

Common questions

Does my provider need to be fully registered by 1 October 2026?

No. The requirement is registered or applied by that date. A provider with an application under assessment can continue delivering and claiming for SIL.

What if my provider applies but is later refused?

The concession applies while an application is being assessed. If an application is ultimately unsuccessful, the provider would no longer be able to deliver SIL and you would need to move. This is a good reason to ask about the application timeline, not just whether one exists.

Who checks this?

In practice, plan managers. From 1 October 2026 they are expected to reject SIL invoices from providers who are neither registered nor applied.

I am self-managed. Does this affect me?

The registration requirement attaches to the SIL support itself rather than only to plan management type. If you are receiving SIL as a package of support arranged by a provider, ask that provider about their registration status. If you direct and roster your own workers, the change does not apply to you.
